What is a Social Media Algorithm?

A social media algorithm is a set of rules and signals that a platform uses to determine which content to show to which users, in what order and at what time. Rather than displaying posts chronologically, every major platform — Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, Facebook — uses its own algorithm to rank content based on predicted relevance and engagement likelihood.

The algorithm's primary goal aligns with the platform's business model: keep users on the app as long as possible. To do that, it shows each user the content most likely to hold their attention. Practically, this means:

Encourage meaningful interaction. Ask questions, invite opinions, create polls. Comments are worth far more than passive likes.
